1st Month

Sweet baby Rosie has lived one whole month!  We are so in love this little girl. She is eating, growing, and sleeping so well!

She also cooperated for picture taking too.  Her sister was a little more finicky, but they look a lot alike!  See for yourself.

I love staring at this baby's face.  It makes those 9 months of torture not seem so bad.  Wow, can't believe I just wrote that!  I'm very happy not to be pregnant anymore!

We are just loving the simple life right now!  I feel lucky that I mostly feel like myself and can do the things I want to do.  I'm just starting to ease back into a fitness routine.  The challenge is to be patient with myself and my body, but I do feel stronger this time around.

I think real smiles are in the near future and I can't wait!

Little Rosie, just remember, "you is kind, you is smart, and you is important!"

18 Months

This little munchkin is officially a nursery-bound 18 month old with growing feet!  So, maybe we celebrated with a little retail therapy.

I have been wanting to buy her pink cowboy boots for a long time and found the perfect pair at Target, but then when we went, I found this pair which were also totes adorbs.  You can see we went with the more sophisticated pair.  We also bought the little Nome some sneakers.  Hylan quickly discovered that she loves them because they increase her speed significantly.

I tell you, this summer continues to be splendid.  I hate that everyone is talking about "back to school."  The funny thing is that I keep thinking, "oh, how great, that doesn't apply to me (snicker snicker), but then I realize for the last 6 years I've been teaching fitness classes at a University, so it DOES apply to me, but in a different way.  My back to school shopping is a few new yoga pants and tops.  HA HA.

Anyway, here are some highlights from the last few weeks.

The aforementioned Highland Splash Pad that I didn't have pictures of before:

 in. out. in. out.

 ahh, not in my face

 sun bathing rock like Ariel's

I love this fun water, Dad!

One night Naomi didn't want to go to bed and this is what the sleepy head looked like after I took out her piggy tails!  :)

Last Friday we had an impromptu family date night that ended up being spontaneously fun!  We ate at Shoots (one of my faves!), and played arcade games at the Beach Resort like Deal or No Deal, and capped it off with a Dole Whip float!  Um, yeshhhhhh pwease!

The next day we investigated the Alpine Splash Pad.  It was fun because it felt remote and serene.  Nomie modeled her new babingsuit (yes, I meant to spell it that way).

I mean, that's precious.

Ha ha, I have so many shoe videos, but I had to round out her obsession with girly heels with her new found admiration for sneakers.  She was walking around in these until I got out my camera.  Still cute, though.

Nomie highlights:

  • Still loves shoes
  • Has discovered fruit snacks and will never refuse them :)
  • She sleeps and eats quite well (unless she is teething, then all bets are off)
  • Speaking of teething, she now has the top central and lateral incisors, and the bottom central incsiors (her first two) with the lateral incisors finally pushing through.  Sheesh, we still have a long way to go.
  • Loves playing outside (chalk, bubbles, pools, splash pads)
  • Now has separation anxiety (taking her to basketball is starting to be difficult, leaving her in Nursery is also becoming difficult, she even sheds a few tears when I leave her with Grandma. I'm hoping she breaks out of this when I start teaching again and she gets used to other company when Hylan and I are gone--it's only a couple hours).
  • She doesn't talk (except Momma, Dadda) but she is increasing her signs every day!
  • She loves her new sign language pop-up book and asks for it every day by doing the sign for book.
  • She loves to help Swiffer the floors.  She'd help with the vacuum too, but that one doesn't work out as well.
  • She will usually sit and let me do her hair.
  • She mostly hates getting her diaper changed (unless she really needs it or she is feeling really calm).
  • Every morning she will grab her Betsy (blanket doll) and Minnie Mouse to take with her out of the crib.
  • I bought her telephone cord bracelets that she adores and rarely takes off. ($2.00 at Target for 10. Perfect size for her. They were mislabeled hair ties. Score for us.)
  • She still watches parts of Frozen and Tangled nearly every day.

What a life!  I love my family!  And I am still loving this summer!

12 Months = 1 Year

Even Nomie can't believe she's a one year-old!

She got to have a fun party too!!

Of course I was too focused on the moment to take lots of pictures, but I got a priceless few with Minnie Nome and her angel food cake.

What's that candle?

 I must touch this cake.

 It's a Minnie Candle!

 This cake is pretty good.
The Strawberry Whipped Cream was PERFECT!

Some of our family members came to celebrate with us.
There was a soft Minnie Mouse theme.

I've realized that having Naomi's birthday one week before Valentine's Day couldn't be more ideal!  There will never be a shortage of pink m&ms, pink polka dotted cupcake liners, and various other pink/red party supplies!  We didn't have to spend a ton of extra money exclusively getting only Minnie Mouse stuff, because it all matched.

Anyway, we ate crock pot chicken fajitas with all the fixings and angel food cake (and cupcakes) with that aforementioned divine strawberry whipped cream.  The meal seemed to be quite popular even with the kids. Success!!

Nomie loved the attention and her present, a plush Minnie Mouse that we bought way back in November! My Mom sent a Winnie the Pooh birthday card with some cash for her Piggy Bank (and a whole mess of new clothes for next year).  And Hylan's Mom gave her a cute puppy card with piggy bank money as well as a cool red watch to play with (which she loves), and some sweet sweater leggings for the future.

It was a great birthday!  Fun had by all.  I even sent this picture to be featured on GTU, a local talk show here in Utah, and she got lots of birthday love from the hosts.  It made my day!  And Nome's.  She stared at herself for a long time.  :)

I can't stop staring either!  Something about your own child, ya know?!  Wow, just wow.

Some milestones this past month:
  • She cut her top two teeth!  (Four months after getting her bottom two teeth)
  • She has had a great sleeping month!  My favorite were the two days in a row last week that she slept 13.5 hours.  I snapped this picture because I couldn't believe it.

  • Nomie is still dependent on her walker to walk.  She doesn't much like it when I make her try to walk on her own, but she'll figure out how much more fun it is to walk around the house instead of crawl.
  • We finally baby-proofed our kitchen cabinets, so now my bathroom is her favorite place...but we keep bathroom doors shut, so hopefully she doesn't learn how to open doors anytime soon.
  • She has finally started asserting some independence when it comes to food.  She still eats almost everything I give her, but here and there, she may spit something out that she doesn't like.
    • I think mandarin oranges are her absolute favorite thing to eat.  That, and those Gerber cheesy puffs.  She will down those in no time.
  • And on the food note, she is a COW MILK drinker now!  Yippee! The transition couldn't have been smoother.  About a week ago, we ran out of formula and kept putting off a Costco trip.  We gave her a bottle of milk and she took it.  And we haven't looked back.
  • But she's still on a bottle.  She thinks sippy cups are funny and will take a sip here and there, but she hasn't mastered the holding, tipping, and drinking technique quite yet.  She does like drinking from an open cup though, so I have hope to transition her off a bottle soon.
----

And just to finish off this Nomie post...

Super Bowl XVIII was awesome if you're a Harper who grew up just outside of Seattle, Washington.

We had a super party here with a perfect outcome.  Skittles all around!

Our basement has been getting lots of use!
Oh, and of course, I had to pull out all the stops...

Super Lemon Cake (with a Happy Birthday message for our nephew).

Daddy and Nomie dressed appropriately for the game!

I even got into the spirit wearing a dark blue dress to church and carried Naomi as my accessory in her pretty green smock dress with bright green stockings.  I wish I had a picture of that.

I really enjoyed being a Seahawks fan for a few weeks, but...

Next year, Eagles!

Next year, it's the Eagles tutu for Naomi!  :)  Next year we will make it further than one game in the playoffs!

What a great past month.  What a great life!  I feel a thousand times better than I did last year at this time. Too much happiness to go around.

11 months

Another month.

She keeps growing!

And sometimes this is how posed picture taking goes.  Can you tell how much I care about photography? Ha!

I'm glad that I decided to document this girl's life one month at a time, because I'm not sure if I would have done any blogging otherwise. I know I'll thank myself again in the future for doing it. Perhaps I'll still document our trip to PA for Thanksgiving soon, but don't hold me to it, but do hold me to the capstone blog of Naomi's 12th month!

So, since I last posted, Naomi decided she loves to real crawl because she is much faster at it. She also loves to pull herself up on every piece of furniture in the house. She loves buttons, cords, lighted buttons, ripping paper, anything that she can chew on, the dishwasher, the Swiffer and dust buster, jewelry (especially ripping my earrings out), pulling off her socks and shoes, playing with Mommy's shoes, climbing on Mom, hopping on Pop, pulling books off the bookshelf (we've finally moved stuff to prevent this), throwing her dolls out of her crib and laughing about it, pulling towels or blankets down, my phone, and the TV remote. Fairly typical stuff.

We bought her a walker for Christmas that has a removable electronic "learning farm" play deck (just like this one) from Costco. It has been her most favorite toy and I feel like a genius for picking it out. She will be walking without support in no time (yay?!).

Naomi still eats anything I give her, so I give her lots of cookies and french fries. Ha ha, j/k! But I may or may not have had to take a piece of cat food out of her mouth (kitty's food had been moved, but he often drops bits on the floor).

She still has trouble with a sleeping routine. Some nights it's a perfect 12 hours. Other nights...well, frustrating to say the least. Some days, two perfect naps. Other days, three naps, no naps, late naps right before bed--oh, those are frustrating--or 11 tries to get one nap.Thank heavens for the awesome glider I found (and for google telling me about random $30 coupon codes!), and for Hylan who assembled that thing even with missing bolts (he found some to fit...don't worry, it's not going to collapse, ha ha).  But actually, she sleeps well, I'm just grumpy if I'm awakened in the middle of the night for any reason.

Nome had her first round of antibiotics/steroids this past month too. The cold I thought had gone away, came back. And since mine did too, and since mine was not a cold but more like the worst bronchitis ever--yep, I still have rib pain from coughing so much in case you're wondering, and since I finally decided to fill my prescription of cough syrup and a "Z pack"--that's why we decided it was okay for her to have some help from modern medicine. She was healthy in time for all of the festivities of the holidays, so I was grateful!

When Hylan comes home, Naomi races Kingo to the door to offer him the biggest grin she can muster. It's the stuff that melts hearts, you know. Unfortunately for Kingo, even if he gets to Daddy first, Naomi gets picked up first. Not to worry, that cat is not neglected. He is a Koala Cat and solicits snuggles all the time!

What else is there to say, but to enjoy these sweet pictures from this past month?

Lenny the Leopard hugs Nomie

Cool sleigh, made by Grandma Harper!

Minnie Nome

Enjoying a lime at Rubio's! (bless their fish tacos, yum!)

Our Christmas card this year, made by my sister-in-law! If Hylan wouldn't have coordinated this, I definitely wouldn't have gotten around to it, so thank you Hylan and Beth!

Hope you had a joyful holiday season. Now, on to more snow and bitter cold. Is it Spring yet?

10 months

Santa's Little Helper lives in our house!

Nomie has been a good traveler, for the most part, as of late. We spent Thanksgiving in PA (more on that to come) and we made it through mostly unscathed. Actually, my worst fear was that she would have a meltdown on the airplane, but she didn't during the 3.5 hour flight there nor did she on the almost 5 hour flight back (dang that head wind). The car rides were more upsetting to her.

But anyway...

Naomi has loved to say Mama, Dada, MumMumMum, DuhDuhDuh for awhile now, but we're starting to think she has connected the dots and knows what it means. Hylan said she pointed both fingers at him and said, "DahDah" with a big smile.

She loves to point at people and things (but mostly me and kitty), is starting to figure out how to wave hello and goodbye, and also has learned how to give high fives--or more correctly put, low fives.

She still loves to eat anything I feed her. She ate lots of stuffing and sweet potatoes during Thanksgiving week, among other things.

Nomie still army crawls everywhere, but just today we caught her regular crawling, like she'd always been doing it that way. Her legs are getting very strong. She pulls herself up in her crib and on other furniture, and loves to walk with help from a parent.

This was the first time I had ever seen her standing by herself.  She's at the point of, stop taking my picture and get me out of this prison crib!

She had her first bout of the sniffles recently, but other than a bit of crankiness and extra snot, it wasn't all that bad. Me on the other hand, I just can't seem to overcome the sniffles....

Naomi readjusted to Utah time and her own crib like a champ! She has been sleeping much more regularly like 8pm-8am with a couple of naps during the day. If she gets a little less sleep at night, she takes longer naps, but we haven't had as much trouble with the whole idea lately. We also learned that WE NEED A ROCKING CHAIR for her bedroom--like 6 months ago we needed it. I had always intended on getting one. My mom even offered to pay for it, but I just couldn't find one and stopped looking a long time ago. Well, it turns out that was a big mistake, so if anyone has a suggestion on where to find a great rocking chair, let me know!

Nomie loves books, especially touch and feel books. She used to love to eat books, but now she loves to point at the pictures and turn the pages. Sometimes she even seems to listen intently while we read. I love that.

Another month down, only two more until she is one year old! Wow.

9 Months

How she grows! This one snuck up on me and I found myself getting confused whether she was 9 months or older.

This girl loves to greet whichever parent has been gone from home. It so joyful to be greeted by a tiny tot who has nothing but smiles and giggles for you.

That being said, this past month has been kind of rough (after the Disney trip). Hylan got sick. I got sick. And Naomi's nap/sleeping schedule was thrown for a loop. I think teething, traveling, and our sicknesses all factored in.Thankfully, for us, Daylight Savings helped get her back going to bed in the 8:00 hour instead of 9, or 10, or waking up at midnight, or whatever it was. I don't really remember because I haven't had much sleep in the past few weeks. I've been coughing for two weeks straight--so much that I've hurt my ribs. But enough about me.

I also think she may be experiencing a growth spurt. Solid 12 hours of sleep/rest at night, good naps, and lots of eating are my clues. But then, when isn't she growing? I love that she is sleeping again, knock on wood.

Her personality comes through more and more each day. She really loves her parents and wants us to play with her and engage her.  Her little toy bin of toys doesn't impress her for very long anymore. She'd rather chase Kingo around the house (she giggles at his tail and it's the cutest!), or lift up mats and rugs to find tags. She loves tags. Tags are more interesting than actual toys. If she could chew on tags all day, she might.

Haha, Kingo giving her a stare down. She hasn't shown interest in cat food yet, that I know of.

Speaking of chewing, she sure has eaten everything in the house, including the book shelves!  It's like having a chipmunk gnawing on the furniture. Mostly, she chews on things less harmful like toys or food. She loves gnawing on celery or carrot sticks, or apple slices. I like it because it keeps her occupied and happy for a few extra minutes while I eat or cook or just decompress! (I still keep my eye on her in case of choking).

Look at that hair! I keep forgetting her hair is long enough for styling. But then, I also keep forgetting that most of the time we're just chillin' at home, so she doesn't need  pants. Those just become a burden when crawling, or they make diaper changing take twice as long. So, pants-less it is from now on, unless we go out. Ha ha. Wait, just to be clear, that only applies to babies!

But yeah, so my hair was actually that color as a baby (maybe slightly redder). Here's proof (not that you can tell all that well in a picture of a picture on a computer):

And I can't believe I'm sharing this because I really think I was not a cute baby at this stage (2 months). Oh my gosh, it just makes me laugh. Baby Emily. Sorry, I'm having a moment here. Can we just focus on the hair?  Man, I was hairy baby.  And pale. Laughably not cute (aww, sorry Mom, I'm sure you thought I was cute).

But here is a cuter picture of me at 9 months(?)! I wish it were clearer. That's me with my Gram (Naomi's namesake) and two of my brothers. Aww, they used to be cute too. And you can't tell, but the brother on the left is hugging a toy snake.  lol. "Man, can we go back to the decor of the early 80's?" said no one ever. HA! We still had that furniture when I was in high school!

So, maybe Naomi and I are slightly related. Slightly! (referring to the hair).

Nome is an expert Cheerio eater. She likes to try to feed herself, but it's hard for me to allow her to make a mess (Cheerios and other Gerber cereal treats aren't messy, so she gets to eat those a lot). I know, I know, she needs to learn, blah blah blah. Textures, blah.  But I hate cleaning up the mess! I let her get sticky rice everywhere (what was I thinking?) Don't worry, she won't experience developmental delays, or exposure to obsessive compulsive behaviors like the need to have everything clean all the time.  She still eats fantastically (from the spoon I feed her) and then she gets to play/chew on a plastic spoon that makes her feel like she's helping. It's a win-win! She also screams every time her face is wiped. Every. Time. What the heck?

Speaking of wiping, um, yeah...we've had some interesting experiences in that regard. She doesn't love her changing table like she used to and mostly just wants to turn over and crawl off the thing. It makes for terribly frustrating experiences when the diaper is ahem yucky, if you know what I mean. I think I tried strapping her down once, but she still managed to flip over, or I felt bad because she was being restrained like a common criminal...

Whew, boy am I on one today? Anyway, I still let her watch Disney Jr. lots. And I still enjoy it more than her. Don't worry, this child will not be a couch potato. She will have no trouble being active. She loves to get out of the house for any reason, as long as she isn't tired. I take her with me when I play b-ball at the church on Wednesday mornings.  She used to like other babies, until they started touching her. Ha ha. She only likes people if she's safe in my or Hylan's arms, I guess. She does really well with many people, especially her grandparents though, so she's going to be just fine.

I'm just thankful she hasn't learned how to open cabinets yet. Maybe she never will? Yeah, right! Ha. It's terribly fun to be her Mom, though sometimes it just seems terrible and I get mad when Hylan takes forever to get home at night and maybe I might slightly celebrate on the nights I leave at 4 to go teach. Maybe. But I always come home happy to see her (unless she has already gone to bed like last night. But yay, for early bedtimes!). Oh my. Now, can we all be healthy again?! We've got a real east coast Thanksgiving to look forward to!

Let's just pretend she is always this deliriously happy! I love pretend!!

8 Months

Nao-me, Nao-my, Nao-mo is now 2/3's of a year old!  WOW.

And guess how this pumpkin is celebrating?  She gets to go somewhere it has taken her mom 31 years to get to (I'll give you a hint: this almost assures her first birthday party theme will be Minnie Mouse!).  What a life!

She has no idea how much fun it's going to be!

Some Naomi milestones of the past month include:

She has cut her first tooth and the second one is not far behind.

She is expanding her foods and still hasn't refused anything I've fed her.  Please stay unpicky my dear!  She can almost self-feed cheerios, but hasn't mastered the pincer technique just yet.

She is becoming more and more mobile.  She can scoot, reach, lunge, and roll her way around.  It will not be long before she is full on crawling!  She just needs a little toy motivation and she is on her way.  She can support herself standing as well.

I will get that phone and look at photos/videos of myself and my kitty brother now!

She is casually interested in TV.  I turn on Doc McStuffins for her...but truthfully, I think I'm more entertained by it.  I also like to turn on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse for her.  But most of the time, she's content to play with her toys, as long as she is well fed and well rested.  And of course, her absolute favorite is Mommy and Daddy playtime.  She can't ever get enough of that!  So, we try to give her the attention she needs and not neglect brother Kingo who also clamors for our attention, particularly during Naomi's nap time.

She loves touching different textures!  One of our favorite past times is getting the mail because she gets to play with all of the newspaper/magazine advertisements!

All she wanted to do was play with this paper sign the whole time I was trying to get her to smile for the camera.

 It got nice and crinkled.

She is just so delightful and still sleeps great.  Bedtime varies from about 7:00-8:30 pm, depending on whether she has had a late 3rd nap.  But in the morning, I don't think I've had to get up before 7:00 am in months! (We go to bed around 10:00 pm, so I get a solid 9 hours of sleep nearly every night, which is precisely what I need!)  So yeah, I've been happy lately, so happy, that I don't think I realized how depressed I was for most of 2013.  I will take these sunshine-y moments and bask in them!

Life is good. Naomi appreciates Daddy-Daughter time while I'm teaching my classes at UVU.  It means so much to me that I get to do that (more than I thought it would).  It makes all these sweet moments more precious and it is so refreshing to my soul.

Here is a pic from a few weeks ago before Fall decided to arrive.

Oh, how we love our little Nomie!

Finally, here is a little Halloween costume preview.

A hot pink strawberry!  Thank you Costco for making all of my dreams come true.  (Yeah, she totally would have picked this one if she had the choice. I know this girl!)

More cuteness to come.
